Our History

Founded in 1976, along with the establishment of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), the Civil Engineering Study Program, the Faculty of Engineering (hereinafter referred to as CESP) is the key higher education study program offering the degree of Bachelor in Civil Engineering. The study program has a strong commitment to becoming an excellent institution educating high-quality graduates who are able to become competent civil engineers. Ever since its establishment, the program is committed to developing high-quality education in the broad spectrum of civil engineering – analysis, design, construction, supervision, and maintenance of infrastructure– with awareness of environmental impact.

Since it was founded, many leaders and prominent alumni have graduated from CESP. They lead and contribute professionally to the company and community at many different top levels; regional, national, and international. These bands of alumni show the commitment of CESP to academic rigor, creative problem-solving, and rich learning experience.

The program is fully aware of the new challenges most of the CE higher education institutions are facing. As a mature profession, civil engineers see a very different world in the near and distant future. An ever-increasing global population that continues to shift to urban areas will require widespread adoption of sustainability in infrastructure projects. Demands for safe drinking and clean water, safe mobility, affordable and reliable energy, as well as safe waste disposal will drive eco-friendly infrastructure development. On the other hand, society must develop its resilience as it faces increased threats from natural events, accidents, and perhaps other causes.

In facing this preceding problem and opportunity, CESP develops its curriculum (2016) by adopting outcome-based education concepts in line with UNS’ vision and mission statement. By maintaining the relevance of the curriculum to the civil engineering practice, The CESP establishes four Program Educational Objectives (PEO) while expecting the graduates to be Planner, Designer, Constructor, Operator, and Policymakers of infrastructure which becoming ever more complex large, and interconnected. Strong encouragement has also been endorsed in the curriculum for the graduates to create techno start-up companies. With global perspectives in mind, many outcome-based learning classes are currently taught bi-lingual (Indonesian – English).

The commitment to the quality brings the CESP has been accredited “A” (excellent) at the national level by the BAN-PT (National Accreditation Board) since 2006. The program successfully maintains its excellent level in the last two reassessments. In 2018, CESP has been internationally certified by AUN QA.

Some research projects and collaborations have also been conducted in a broad spectrum of civil engineering disciplines by establishing research groups. Several high-quality publications have been published in many reputable indexed journals by our academic staff. S o m e o t h e r internationalization programs are also regularly conducted such as inviting visiting professors to deliver special courses and technical assistance, organizing international conferences, research collaboration and joint publications with international scholars, sending faculty members to disseminate their works in international seminars, and others.
