The inevitable globalization and urbanization, improved quality of life and the high intensity of economic growth lead to increasing demand for reliable infrastructure. On the other hand, the threat of natural and man-made disasters requires adaptive and resilient infrastructure.
Civil engineering studies the mechanical behavior of materials and structures. Civil engineers utilize wood, steel and concrete, and new innovative materials to build building structures, bridges, stadiums that meet the needs of society. Civil Engineering Department FT UNS launched an adaptive resiliency initiative by conducting research to seek and develop material and structural mechanics technology to ensure infrastructure reliability.
Research activities in this focus are actively carried out by the following research groups:
SMARTCrete conducts research in innovative materials for the repair and rehabilitation of civil structures, Textile Reinforced Concrete with Agave Cantula Roxb natural fiber materials, rehabilitation of structural elements with patch repair
SMARTComposite focuses on the research of truss structure innovation with cold-formed steel.
SMARTWood conducts bamboo utilization research as concrete reinforcement, a long-term deformation behavior model of timber.
SMARTQuake evaluates seismic risk in urban areas with research on the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, fragility and vulnerability analysis, and exposure model.
